Terms & Conditions

1. Service Description
ClearYear provides a software service that facilitates the submission of UK Self Assessment tax returns to HMRC on behalf of self-employed individuals. We are a software facilitator — we do not provide tax advice.
2. Eligibility
This service is available to UK residents who are required to file a Self Assessment tax return. By using this service, you confirm that:
- You are a UK taxpayer registered for Self Assessment
- The information you provide is accurate and complete
- You are authorising us to submit your return to HMRC on your behalf
3. Your Responsibilities
You are solely responsible for:
- The accuracy of all income, expense, and personal information you provide
- Ensuring your return is submitted before the HMRC deadline
- Any tax liability arising from your return
- Maintaining your own records as required by HMRC
ClearYear is not a tax advisor. If you are unsure about your tax position, please consult a qualified accountant.
4. Payment & Fees
- The service fee is £30.00 (inclusive of any applicable tax) per tax return submission
- Payment is required before HMRC authorisation and submission
- All payments are processed securely by Stripe
5. Refund Policy
- Before HMRC submission: Full refund available if requested within 24 hours of payment
- After HMRC submission: No refund available — the service has been delivered
- Technical failure: If submission fails due to our system error, a full refund will be issued
To request a refund, email: support@clearyear.co.uk
6. Limitation of Liability
ClearYear's liability is limited to the amount paid for the service (£30.00). We are not liable for:
- HMRC penalties arising from inaccurate information you provided
- HMRC system outages or processing delays
- Late submission if caused by HMRC downtime
7. HMRC Authorisation
For Making Tax Digital (MTD) filings, proceeding to the HMRC authorisation step grants ClearYear permission to submit that specific return to HMRC via your Government Gateway account. This authorisation is used immediately for your submission attempt and is not retained by us afterward — we do not keep a lasting connection to your HMRC account between filings. If you file again in future (e.g. the following tax year, or an amendment), you will need to authorise ClearYear again through the same HMRC login step. You can review or revoke ClearYear's access at any time via your own HMRC Government Gateway account, independently of whether we're currently holding anything on our side.
For Traditional Self Assessment filings, you provide your HMRC Government Gateway username and password directly at the point of submission; these are used only for that single submission and are never stored by us (see §8).
8. Data Protection
We process your data in accordance with our Privacy Policy and UK GDPR. Your National Insurance Number and UTR are never stored in plaintext — only a one-way hash is retained. The income, expense, and calculated tax figures on your return are retained against your submission record (not just during your session), since HMRC requires we can evidence what was actually filed — see our Privacy Policy for the full breakdown of what is and isn't stored, and for how long.
9. Governing Law
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
